The benefit of full rear suspension on your e-trike. What you can expect from it.
Hey, everyone. I'm Dustin. I have 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. Today, I'm going to talk to you about full suspension in the rear, or rear suspension in an e-trike. What's the benefit of it? Why would you want or need it? All right, so right here is our Simple Glide dual motor dual battery, also rear suspension e-trike. It's linked in the description if you want to check it out. Now, we get a lot of customers, oftentimes requesting suspension. A lot of times they want front suspension. Uh, now sometimes people want rear suspension. And, you know, I always want to find out why you want the suspension before, um, just thrusting a product onto somebody.
Cause I know there's a lot of information out there, and you know, people may think it's best to have, oh, you need the front suspension. Oh, you need the rear suspension. And I'm really not an advocate of that. I'm all about matching up the correct product to your body and also to the correct use case for you. So for many people, if you're riding on pavement, full suspension, meaning front suspension, even rear, can actually make the e-trike more inefficient. And what I mean by that is because if you are, you know, constantly bouncing and the frame is moving like this, yes, you're getting some level of shock absorption, but it's also, you know, causing the bike to move up and down, which is gonna reduce your range. It's not gonna roll as fast now.
I can't quantify how inefficient that's going to be. But my point is that you have to be certain that you want that extra cushiness to the ride. And what I find is that for most paved circumstances, like paved bike trails or bike lanes or streets, it's not always necessary, in particular for the front. Now, on our Simple Glide, our fork is so small we couldn't conveniently put a front suspension on there. But also, when you add a fat tire and reduce the air pressure a little bit, that is gonna act as its own suspension and add that vibration suppression, which, if you have hands that go numb and that's something you're concerned about, the fat tires will definitely be a blessing, right? It'll help a lot. And when you think about a fork of this size, if you had a suspension fork on there, the travel of the fork's gonna be so minimal, right? When you talk about suspension forks on mountain bikes, there's a lot of travel there, right? That front fork can move up and down a lot to absorb really, really big holes and dips when you're out riding on mountain bike trails. So something like this, yeah, you might get a little bit of travel up and down, but it's not gonna be seriously substantial. The other thing too is when you get suspension forks, they oftentimes have the ability for it to be in two different modes. One is what they call unlocked, the other is locked. When it's unlocked, that's gonna allow the fork to move up and down. If it's locked, that's gonna keep the fork stiff. You wanna keep it stiff, because again, it's gonna roll easier, pedal easier, and be more efficient.
So again, if you're riding on paved surfaces that are even, and there's not a lot of dips, locking it is a best-case scenario, and because we believe that's like 70, 80% of riders, it's not always necessary to have the suspension in the front. Now, don't get me wrong, we have other trikes, they have the suspension in the front, and we think it is, you know, can be valuable in certain situations, but not always necessary. Now, as we move back to the rear here, you can see this has the suspension underneath the seat, and you can see how much flex there is in the frame. Now again, if you're on bumpy terrain, because I've taken this off-road, it is without a doubt incredible. And if I take our Simple Glide out there that has the rigid frame, and I take this frame out there that has a suspension, this absorbs the bumps unbelievably. And it's really, really nice to have.
Again, if you plan on going on hardpack trails, dirt trails, whatever it may be, having that rear suspension without a doubt makes a huge impact. Now, again, being on pavement, you're not going to feel that impact as much, other than the frame going to flex. Again, now you're making the trike more inefficient from a rolling perspective. Having that rigid frame even in the rear is going to make it roll better on hard packed surfaces versus having that suspension. Now, in the case of this suspension, we can't turn it on and off. Those springs are there. It's always going to have that flex in the rear no matter what. But again, if you want something really cushy, and you can see when I get on here, you can see how it flexes like so, right?
That's really what's going to make this so comfortable on the off-road terrain. It's going to move up and down as I go over those bumps. And as I said, it does make a big difference. So something to think about, especially if maybe certain parts of your body go numb or the vibrations bother you, and you really want it to be as soft a ride as possible, then absolutely look into something with suspension, or you can opt for our simple glide dual motor. Because we do have a lot of riders where that is the case, where the vibrations cause numbness in their legs, their hips, their arms, you name it, I get it, in your hands. And so you have to decide which features are best for you. So any other questions or comments on suspension on a trike, please put them below or reach out to us at theteam@sixthreezero.mom, or call us at 310-982-2877.
