Where Can You Actually Test Ride an Electric Trike? Where to Test Ride E-Trikes in the U.S.

Where can I test ride electric trikes before I buy?

Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. Today I'm going to answer the question, where can I test ride e-trikes before I buy? Right here I've got three of sixthreezero's e-trikes, our Simple Glide 500-watt, our EZ Transit folding, and our Simple Glide dual motor. Check those out in the description if you want to find out more about them. All right, if you are contemplating the purchase of an electric tricycle, I know it's an expensive purchase, right? It's going to range anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000, $6,000, depending on the features, the style, the design, you name it. So oftentimes people want to test ride their e-trike before purchasing.

Where to Test Ride E-Trikes

Now, that's kind of the tricky thing with e-trikes is they're not as readily available in stores as e-bikes and regular bikes. The reason for that is because they take up more space, right? And most bike shops are focused on two-wheel bikes, and that is their bread and butter.

  1. Local Bike Stores: So if you want to test ride an e-trike before you purchase, you're oftentimes gonna have to find a specific store catering to the tricycle, um, genre. Now that isn't always true. Oftentimes what you'll find with local bike stores is they'll have one trike on hand, maybe, or they will have a brand they work with that manufactures a trike that they could order for you. So when you walk into a bike shop, at best, most likely you're going to find one electric trike on the floor. If that.
  2. Specialty Tricycle Stores: Now, the other option, as I said, is you find a more, uh, niche store that's focused on the tricycle market, something that caters to the three-wheel audience. Now, those stores exist as well. They may not be as common in less densely populated areas. I know in major cities you may find one or two of those stores. So it's not like even in major metropolises like LA, Chicago, New York, you're not gonna find 10 or 15 of these trike-specific stores. But you may find one, two, or three. And then, of course, those stores are only going to carry specific brands. So often you'll be able to test ride what they have. If you don't like anything, well then you're back to the drawing board if you wanna take a test ride on something you're interested in. Or if you find something online and you ask that store, hey, do you carry this? And they say, no, well then you can't get your test ride.
  3. Brand-Owned Showrooms: Now, the reason stores have certain brands is A, they may like their products, B, they may get good terms, payment terms from them, or they may have just been working with them for a long time, or their profitability may be good, right? The reason a store chooses to carry certain products isn't always because that's what the customers necessarily want. It's also what's best for the store. So at sixthreezero, we do have our trikes in stores, but we don't have a plethora of them across the country. Which, again, makes it difficult to find where to test ride. Now, the other option is to find a store owned by the brand itself. Now, I think the majority of e-trike companies are based here in California. And we do get a lot of customers that come out here, and they stop by here because you can test ride at our location. There are also other brands in California you can test ride. So often people come here either while they're already on vacation, or we've had customers fly in just to test ride, and then they can hit up multiple brands all at once while in California. And that's a decision they make because if they're spending two, three, $4,000, they wanna make sure they can touch and feel that product before they spend that kind of money. So, again, it's really up to you. I know if you live in an area that either A, doesn't have a lot of bike shops or nobody carries trikes, well then you're also left with the decision, okay, should I just buy it online?
  4. Rental Shops: So the other thing I was gonna say is you can also find rentals, places to test drive, but that's also gonna be a difficult proposition. And what is a good trike for a rental isn't necessarily what's a good trike for home ownership because often the products used for rentals are just more, not necessarily bulky, but they're built to last, right? So there might be features on there that are more on the commercial side that really aren't necessary for home ownership. So it's not gonna give you a great idea of what's out there, but that is an option if you just wanna get onto three wheels and see what it feels like.
