I Put a 65-Year-Old on Our Fat Tire Step-Thru and Let Him Talk

When I hand somebody one of our bikes and send them down the road, I'm not after the rehearsed version. I want the running commentary - what people say out loud when they've half-forgotten anyone is listening. That unguarded stream is where you learn whether a bike actually does the job you built it to do. So I put Rob Mark on the fat tire step-through e-bike, aimed him at a stretch of road with some fresh air, a couple of turns and a hill or two, and let him talk the whole way through.

Rob is 65, and he says so in his first breath, standing in the sun with the bike between his knees, calling it "this beauty" before he's even pushed off. I like that he leads with the number, because the number is the whole point. Plenty of people reach their sixties and quietly decide the bike-riding chapter of their life is over. Balance isn't quite what it was. A knee talks back. The thought of swinging a leg over a tall frame and grinding up a hill in a sweat starts to feel like a younger person's hobby. Rob's ride is the rebuttal to all of that, and he never once reached for a script to make the case.

What he's actually sitting on

The bike under Rob is our Simple Step-Thru in its fat tire, electric form. Three features define it, and every one of them surfaces in his commentary before he's done. The first is the step-through frame - that low, open gap where an old-school bike would put a bar you have to hoist your leg over. You walk through it and sit down instead of climbing aboard. The second is the fat tires: wide, deep, cushioned rubber that grips the ground and swallows bumps most tires would rattle straight into your wrists. The third is the electric drivetrain - a hub motor you can feed two different ways, through pedal assist while you're pedaling and through a thumb throttle when you'd rather the bike carried the load. Layer gears on top of that, and at any moment you're mixing three things: your own legs, the gear you've chosen, and how much electric help you've dialed in.

That mix is exactly why I handed Rob this bike instead of something twitchier. The step-through is the piece people undervalue until they've wrestled a high-bar bike for a few years. When the frame drops away in the middle, mounting and dismounting stop being a small athletic event. You don't hike your leg up and back; you step in, sit, and go. For a rider who's a little wary of balance, or nursing a hip or a knee, that single design choice is the difference between a bike that stays in the garage and one that gets ridden every day. Rob feels it right away. When someone's that relaxed - relaxed enough to talk to himself, to call his own turns, to crack jokes about how he looks - you're seeing the honest experience of the bike, not a performance of it.

Over the next several minutes he covers, without prompting, nearly every question a shopper asks me in the showroom: How does it handle turns? What are the brakes like? Can I actually get a workout, or does the motor do everything? What's it like on a hill? Would this replace my car for short trips? Is it comfortable enough to ride for a while? He answers all of it out loud, in the middle of doing it. Across the rest of this piece I'm going to walk through what he found, section by section, and fill in the context behind each reaction - because Rob's instincts about this bike were right, and they line up with why we build it the way we do. Fat Tires, Real Traction, and the Feeling of Being Planted

The first thing Rob keeps coming back to is the fat tires, and he's not wrong to fixate on them. On a bike like this, the tires do more work than any other single component in shaping how the ride feels. Rob describes it in the plainest possible terms: it rides smooth, the fat tire really helps, and there's lots of good traction. Simple words, but they point at real physics.

A fat tire is wide, and it runs at a lower air pressure than a skinny road tire. That does two useful things at once. It puts more rubber in contact with the ground, which is where grip comes from - more contact patch, more traction, more of that planted sensation Rob keeps mentioning. And because there's more air cushioning you from the pavement, the tire acts like a first layer of suspension. Cracks, gravel, driveway lips, the seam where the road meets a curb - a lot of that gets absorbed by the tire before it ever reaches your hands or your back. Rob puts it his own way: "I feel like I'm really on the ground." That grounded feeling is the whole point of fat tire electric bikes, and it's especially reassuring for a rider who wants to feel stable rather than perched.

Turning, weaving, and staying in control

Rob turns onto a side street and immediately notices how the bike takes the corner: "these fat tires are sure good for those turns." On a two-wheel bike, a turn is a lean - you tip the bike into the corner and the contact patch does the rest. With a wide, grippy tire underneath you, that lean feels supported instead of nervous. The tire holds its line. Nothing washes out or skitters. Earlier he'd been weaving the bike back and forth just to play; now, on a real corner, that same confidence pays off. He says it more than once, because it clearly surprises him: "I feel like I'm in control. I feel like I'm really in control in this. I've got great control."

That word - control - is the one I most want to hear from a rider who's a little out of practice. Control is what turns a bike from something you brace against into something you steer. It's the feeling that the machine is answering you, not the other way around. A stable frame, wide tires, an upright riding position where you can see everything around you, and a low center of gravity all stack up to produce it. Rob didn't need any of that explained. He just felt in charge, said so, and kept riding.

The brakes

He tests the brakes and reports back without any prompting: "Brakes are good, too. The brakes are really good." I'm always glad when a rider volunteers this, because braking is one of those things nobody thinks about until it isn't there. Confident stopping power is non-negotiable on an e-bike, because an e-bike carries more weight and more speed than a standard bike - the motor and battery add heft, and the assist gets you moving quicker than leg power alone. You want brakes that can scrub that off cleanly and predictably, in the dry and in the wet, at the bottom of a hill as easily as on the flat. When Rob says the brakes are really good, what he's describing is trust: he pulls the lever, the bike slows the way he expects, and he never has to think about it again.

Downhill, wind, and the smooth stretch

Then comes the downhill, and Rob's clearly enjoying himself - "Downhill, baby. Staying in my lane" - while still keeping his head, watching his position on the road as gravity does the work. "Wow, that wind feels good," he says, and honestly that line captures something a spec sheet never will. There's a particular pleasure in rolling downhill on a bike with the air moving past you, no engine noise, no effort, just the quiet and the breeze. He calls the ride smooth more than once, and on a fat-tire bike a downhill is where smooth really announces itself: the tires are eating the small stuff, the frame's steady under you, and you get to simply coast and feel it.

One quick, honest note about downhill speed, because I'd rather you hear it from me. Coasting downhill, gravity will always carry you faster than the motor alone pushes you on flat ground - that's true of any bike, electric or not. So the fun little rush Rob gets on the descent isn't the same thing as the bike's motor-driven top speed on level pavement. If a specific top speed matters to you, check the spec sheet for the exact figure and know your local e-bike class rules, since where and how fast e-bikes can legally go varies by state and even by path. It's a small thing, but I'd rather you ride informed.

By the end of this stretch Rob has summed up the tires, the handling, the brakes and the ride quality in a single offhand sentence I couldn't have written better in a brochure: "It rides just as good as it looks." That's the fat-tire package doing exactly what it's supposed to do.

Two Ways to Power the Bike: Your Legs or the Motor

Here's where Rob stumbles onto the single most important idea about an e-bike, and he says it so casually you could miss it: "I can choose to use more strength or use more electricity." That's it. That's the whole philosophy of pedal assist in one sentence, from a 65-year-old in his first few minutes on the bike.

An e-bike like this one isn't a motor scooter, and it isn't an ordinary bicycle. It's a dial that runs between the two, and you're the one holding it. Turn the assist up and the motor shoulders most of the effort while your legs just keep time. Turn it down and you're getting a real workout with a gentle push behind each stroke. Turn it off entirely and it's a bicycle you pedal with your own two legs. Rob moves up and down that dial constantly, and narrates it as he goes: "Switching gears. Switching power. Sometimes I like a little power, sometimes I don't. The boosts are good."

On top of the electric assist, there are gears - the same kind you'd find on any quality bike. Rob spends the opening stretch in his lowest gear, feeling the traction, and later he's switching it up to go faster, calling out "pump it up, pump it up" as he pushes the pace. Gears and assist are two separate controls that work together: the gear changes how your pedaling translates to the wheels, and the assist changes how much the motor adds. Once it clicks, you stop thinking about it and just ride - a little more leg here, a little more motor there, a lower gear for the climb, a higher one for the open flat.

"It's like nothing"

The line of Rob's I keep replaying is this one. He eases off, then starts pedaling again with the assist helping, and says: "Now I'm going to pedal again. And it's like nothing. It's like nothing. It's so good." That "like nothing" is the exact sensation we're chasing. Your legs are moving, you're pedaling a real bike, you're getting the circulation and the motion and the gentle exercise - but the resistance that would normally have you huffing simply isn't there. The motor erases the hard part and leaves the pleasant part. For a lot of riders, and especially for riders who've been away from cycling for years, that feeling is the thing that brings them back. The throttle

Then there's the throttle, which is the other way to make the bike go. Instead of pedaling, you press a thumb lever and the motor moves you along on its own - no pedaling required. Coming from Rob, "kills you" is a compliment - he means the surge is immediate and strong, more than he expected. The throttle is genuinely useful, not just fun. Rob names that use case himself later on: he loves that he got exercise, "but not too much." The throttle is how you cap the too much.

The hill

Every honest e-bike review comes down to a hill eventually, and Rob's does too. He hits a real climb - the kind he's clear-eyed about - and calls it out: "A hill like this, people would be walking their bikes. I'm going strong and feeling it." A beat later, at the top: "That was pretty smooth uphill. Not bad." That's the moment the electric assist earns its keep. On a standard bike, a hill like that is a decision - do I grind up it and arrive winded, or do I get off and walk? On this bike it's neither. You drop to a lower gear, dial the assist up, keep pedaling at a comfortable cadence, and the motor makes up the difference. You still feel the climb - Rob says he's feeling it, and that's good, that's the exercise - but you're feeling it as effort, not as suffering, and you're riding over the top instead of pushing your bike up the sidewalk.

That's the balance the whole bike is built around, and Rob keeps landing on it in his own words. Great exercise, he says. Fresh air. But not too much. He gets to choose, minute to minute, how hard this ride is - strength or electricity, or any blend of the two. Nobody's ever too fit or too out-of-shape for a bike that adjusts to meet them exactly where they are on a given day. That single idea - that you set the effort, not the bike - is the reason an e-bike gets ridden long after a regular bike would be gathering dust.

The Step-Through, the Seat, and Why It Rides Like a Beach Cruiser's Smarter Cousin

Rob spent years on a classic beach cruiser. He mentions it more than once, and it clearly frames how he's judging this bike: "This is the next level of beach cruiser. I've lived at the beach for years and always drove a beach cruiser, but this is the next level of a beach cruiser." Rob knows that trade-off intimately after years of it. What he's reacting to on this ride is that the good part of the cruiser survives intact - the upright comfort, the easy posture, the wide friendly saddle - while the part that used to end the fun on a hill has been quietly solved by the motor. I keep returning to the frame because it's the quiet hero of this whole bike. The step-through design is what lets Rob - or anyone - get on and off without ceremony. There's no leg-swing over a high bar, no little hop, no moment of balancing on one foot while you sort yourself out. You step through the low part of the frame, settle onto the seat, and you're ready. For younger, limber riders that's a nice convenience. For riders who are older, or shorter, or dealing with a stiff hip or a cranky knee, it's the feature that makes the bike possible at all. Take the intimidation out of the very first move - getting on - and the whole activity opens back up.

Fit is the other half of comfort, and it's worth being honest about. The comparison Rob reaches for most often isn't to another bike at all - it's to a car. "It's like driving a hybrid car, but more fun," he says, and then he doubles down: "If you like your hybrid car, you'll love this." A little later he makes the practical version of the same point: "I would use it just instead of a car."

That's not a throwaway line - it's the strongest case for a bike like this, and Rob arrives at it entirely on his own. And then the part that isn't about specs at all: "This is all-day fun. And why not? No matter what age you are, why not?" I don't have anything to add to that. He's right. The bike is fun, and fun doesn't have an age limit.
