What a Semi-Recumbent Frame Actually Does
Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I've spent 20 years in the bike and eBike industry, and I want to walk you through one of the more interesting bikes we build: the Relaxed Body 2025, a 500-watt semi-recumbent eBike. The name isn't marketing fluff. This frame is genuinely built around your body sitting in a more relaxed position than a standard bike allows, and once you understand the idea behind it, a lot of the design choices start to make sense.
Let's start with the term. A recumbent bike is the one you've probably seen where the rider is practically lying back with their legs stretched straight out in front. Great for comfort, but it looks and feels very different from a normal bike, and some riders find that a big adjustment. The Relaxed Body is what we call a semi-recumbent. It's not that extreme. You still sit fairly upright, and to anyone watching, it looks like you're on a normal bike. The difference is that the pedals are moved forward, out in front of your body, instead of sitting directly underneath your hips.
That one change solves a problem that trips up a lot of riders. On a traditional frame, the pedals fall right below your seat. So your seat height and your leg extension are locked together. If you drop the seat low enough to plant both feet flat on the ground at a stop, your knees end up bunched up when you pedal, and you lose power and comfort. If you raise the seat high enough to get proper leg extension, now you're tiptoeing at every stop sign, or you have to slide off the seat entirely to reach the ground. Most people just live with one compromise or the other.
Moving the pedals forward breaks that link. Because your feet reach out in front of you rather than straight down, you can run the seat low, plant your feet flat when you stop, and still get full leg extension while you ride. You're not choosing between stability at a stop and comfort in motion. You get both. That's the whole point of the design, and it's why I keep steering certain riders toward it.
Sitting lower to the ground has a second benefit that's harder to describe until you've felt it: you're just less perched. On a tall bike you're up in the air, and if you're at all nervous about balance or about catching yourself, that height works against you. Drop the rider closer to the ground and a lot of that tension goes away. People relax their shoulders, loosen their grip, and ride longer because their body isn't quietly bracing the whole time.

But for most people, the semi-recumbent is the sweet spot. It gives you the ergonomic payoff without asking you to relearn how to ride. The Relaxed Body sits inside our broader family of comfort-focused electric bikes, and within that group it's the one I reach for when a rider's main issue is the seat-height-versus-leg-extension bind.
Here's the mental model I give people. Picture where your feet land on a normal bike: straight down, tucked under you. Now picture sliding those pedals about a foot forward and letting the frame stretch out to meet them. Your seat can come way down, your legs still get to reach out and press, and getting on and off turns into a simple slide back onto the saddle rather than a swing of the leg over a tall bar. That's the Relaxed Body in one picture. Everything else on the bike is built to support that riding position and make it more comfortable, more capable, and easier to live with day to day.
When people ask me who the Relaxed Body is for, my honest answer is that it fits a wider range of riders than almost anything else we make. But there are three groups it's especially good for, and it's worth spelling them out because you might see yourself in one of them.
Shorter riders. If you've ever shopped for a bike and felt like everything was built for someone taller, you know the frustration. Standard frames often can't drop the seat low enough for you to feel planted, and even when they do, your legs are cramped. Because the Relaxed Body's seat comes down so low and the pedals sit out front, a shorter rider can be flat-footed at every stop and still get a real, full pedal stroke. No tiptoeing, no cut-short leg extension.
Taller riders. This surprises people, but the same design helps at the other end of the spectrum. Tall riders frequently can't find an eBike that gives them enough leg extension, and they end up folded up over a frame that's too small for them. The Relaxed Body ships with two seat posts. The shorter one drops the seat all the way down for smaller riders; the longer one raises it up to accommodate riders up to 6 feet 4 inches. And because the pedals are already forward, a tall rider gets leg extension from two directions at once, out in front and up in height. You have room to actually stretch out.
Riders who are unsure about mounting a tall bike. This is a big one. A lot of people have quietly stopped riding, or never started, because swinging a leg up and over a high seat feels risky. Maybe it's a balance concern, maybe it's a past injury, maybe it's just not wanting to take the chance. On the Relaxed Body you don't swing over anything. You step through a low, open frame and slide back onto the seat. That single change is the difference between riding and not riding for more people than you'd think.
There's a fourth group I'd add from experience: anyone dealing with joint sensitivity in the knees or hips. The forward pedal position and the low, relaxed posture take a lot of the harsh, straight-down pressure out of pedaling. I'm careful not to make medical claims here, and if you have a specific condition you should absolutely talk to your doctor about whether cycling is right for you. But in terms of pure riding feel, the semi-recumbent position is gentler on the body than a hunched-forward, pedals-underneath setup, and riders tell me that constantly.
If easy mounting is your number one priority, it's worth knowing the Relaxed Body isn't the only way we solve that. One thing I always tell riders in every one of these groups: the specs on paper only tell you so much. Fit is personal. The seat that feels perfect to me at 230 pounds and my height might want to move an inch for you. That's exactly why the bike is as adjustable as it is, which is where I want to go next.
The Relaxed Body earns its name in the details of how it adjusts, so let me get specific about the numbers and what they mean when you're actually standing over the bike.
The step-through. The stepover height on this frame is 17 and a half inches, and the open span you step through is a full 17 inches wide. That's a lot of room. You're not lifting your leg up and over anything or threading it through a tight gap. You step through a genuinely open frame and settle onto the seat. For anyone who's felt that little moment of hesitation before mounting a tall bike, this is what removes it.
The two seat posts. I mentioned these earlier, but they deserve a closer look because they're central to how the bike fits such a wide range of people. In its lowest position, the seat drops down to 28 and a half inches, which is exceptionally low for an eBike. That's the setting that lets shorter riders sit flat-footed. Swap in the longer seat post and you can raise the saddle to fit riders up to 6 feet 4 inches. Two posts, one frame, and a fit window that stretches from quite short to quite tall.
The forward pedals, measured. The pedals on this bike are shifted forward 13 inches from where they'd sit on a traditional frame. I want to explain why that specific move matters so much, because it's the mechanical heart of the whole design. On a normal bike the crank sits right under your hips, your butt, your lower back. Here, that whole pedaling zone is pushed out in front of you by just over a foot. That's what lets the seat go so low while your legs still get to reach out and fully extend. Lower the seat on a normal bike and you cramp up; lower it here and the forward reach keeps your stroke long and comfortable. The 13 inches is doing quiet, important work every time you pedal.
The handlebars. Up top you've got what we call mini ape hanger handlebars, and they have an adjustment point that lets you tilt them toward your body. If you want the grips to come back closer to you, you can bring them right in so your arms sit relaxed and your shoulders drop. That releases the tension a lot of riders carry through their upper body without even noticing it. During a long ride, being able to set the bars exactly where your arms want them is the difference between finishing loose and finishing stiff. And bar preference is genuinely personal. When I fit different riders on this bike, almost everyone lands on a slightly different bar angle. Most people, myself included, end up liking them pulled in a bit closer for control, but you should set them wherever your body relaxes.
The seat itself is wide and cushioned, which fits the whole philosophy of the bike. You're sitting back into a supportive saddle rather than perching on a narrow racing seat.
Here's my honest advice on fit: don't guess, and don't assume the out-of-the-box setting is your setting. The reason this bike works for so many body types is that you can move the seat height, the seat position, and the bar angle to suit you specifically. Comfort is the headline, but the Relaxed Body is still an eBike, and the powertrain is what makes those low-effort, long rides possible. Here's how it's set up.
The motor. This is a 500-watt eBike. That's a strong, versatile power level for a comfort-oriented bike. It's enough to get you moving briskly from a stop, carry you at a steady cruise without much effort, and, importantly, help you up hills that would otherwise be a grind. I'll get into the hill climbing later because it's worth its own story, but the short version is that 500 watts is plenty of muscle for the kind of riding this bike is built for.
The battery. The battery lives at the back of the bike and it's removable. You just slide it out. That means you can charge it two ways: leave it on the bike and plug in, or pull the battery off and bring it inside to charge wherever's convenient. If you park in a garage without an outlet nearby, or you live somewhere you'd rather not leave the whole bike by a plug, that flexibility is genuinely useful. The bike is rated for a range of up to 50 miles on a charge, which for most riders is far more than a typical outing needs, so you're not planning your day around the battery.
The gears. This is a seven-speed eBike, and those are real mechanical gears, exactly like the ones on a regular bike. A lot of people getting into eBikes don't realize they'll have both. Your gears and your electric assist work together. You shift gears to change how hard or easy the pedaling feels for a given effort, and the motor adds power on top of that. On a climb, for example, you can shift down into an easier gear and lean on the assist, and the two stack up to make a steep hill genuinely manageable.
The five levels of pedal assist. On top of the gears you've got five levels of electric pedal assist. Level one gives you the least amount of help while you pedal; level five gives you the most. So you're always in control of how much of the work is you and how much is the motor. Want a real workout? Ride in a low assist level. Want to just cruise and enjoy the scenery? Bump it up to five and let the bike do the heavy lifting. You can change it on the fly as the terrain changes.
The throttle. There's also a thumb throttle on the handlebar. Push it with your thumb and the bike goes without you pedaling at all. That's handy for pulling away from a stop, for giving your legs a rest, or for anyone who wants the option of not pedaling on a given stretch. On throttle alone, the bike tops out right around 20 miles per hour. In pedal assist you'll get to about the same, a touch over. One note on that top speed: eBike classes and the rules about throttle use and maximum assisted speed vary from state to state and even between local jurisdictions and specific trails or paths. I'd encourage you to check the regulations where you actually ride before you assume what's allowed. It's a quick check and worth doing.
The display. Front and center you've got a nice large display that's easy to read at a glance. It shows your battery life, your power output, and how fast you're going, so you always know where you stand without squinting or fumbling. If you're familiar with the original Relaxed Body, a lot carries over here. But for the 2025 edition we added a couple of features I'm genuinely glad we did, because they target the two things that most affect a comfortable ride: how the bike absorbs bumps, and how safe you are out on the road.
The front suspension fork. This is the headline upgrade, and it fits the whole comfort theme of the bike. The Relaxed Body 2025 has a front suspension fork that moves up and down as you roll over curbs, bumps, cracks, uneven pavement, or light off-road terrain. Instead of every jolt from the road traveling straight up through the fork and into your hands, arms, and body, the fork soaks up a good share of it. On a comfort bike, that's exactly what you want. We named this thing the Relaxed Body, so adding another layer of vibration damping was an easy call.
What I really like is that the fork has a lockout. You can flip it into a locked position where it won't move up and down at all. Why would you want to lock a suspension fork? Efficiency. When you're riding primarily on smooth pavement or flat ground, a locked fork lets the front wheel roll more efficiently, smoother and a little faster, because none of your energy is getting absorbed into the suspension bobbing up and down. So you get to choose based on the ride in front of you. Smooth road and you want efficiency? Lock it out. Rough terrain, bumps, or you just want the plushest possible ride? Unlock it and let the fork do its job. You'll give up a little efficiency with the fork active, but you gain that cushioning and the ease it takes off your body. Having both options on one bike means you're never stuck with the wrong setup.
If your riding leans heavily toward rougher surfaces, sand, or trails, suspension is one tool for that, and bigger tires are another. It's worth taking a look at our fat-tire electric bikes if that's where you spend most of your time, since wider tires add their own cushioning and grip. But for the mix of pavement and the occasional bump that most riders actually deal with, the lockout fork on the Relaxed Body covers both ends nicely.
Integrated lights. The 2025 edition also adds integrated front and rear lights. These are built into the bike, so there's nothing to clip on, charge separately, or forget at home. Being seen matters, especially in the early morning or around dusk, and having lights that are just always there, front and back, is one of those quiet safety features you appreciate every time the light gets low.
Disc brakes. The bike has front and rear disc brakes. Disc brakes give you strong, consistent, controlled stopping power, and they hold up well in a range of conditions. When you're carrying a bit of speed, or coming down a hill, or you just need to stop confidently in traffic, good brakes are non-negotiable, and I want riders to feel completely in control of slowing down. On my ride the braking was quiet and smooth, and easing into a gradual, controlled stop was effortless. For a comfort bike that a lot of newer and returning riders will be on, dependable disc brakes at both wheels are exactly what I want to see.
Put those three together, a lockout suspension fork, always-on lights, and disc brakes front and rear, and the 2025 Relaxed Body is a noticeably more refined, more confident bike than a comfort cruiser without them. None of these upgrades change the core semi-recumbent idea. They just make living with it better.
Specs are one thing. Riding is another. So let me take you through what the Relaxed Body 2025 feels like once you're actually rolling, including a hill that gave me a real workout.
The first thing I do on this bike is set the handlebars. I brought them in closer to my body because I like my arms relaxed with good control, and that adjustment point up top makes it a two-second change. Then I set the suspension fork to engaged, so it moves up and down and gives me that nice cushy ride, kicked up the kickstand, and headed out.
The first thing you notice pulling away is that this is a longer frame. That's what makes it a semi-recumbent, the stretch that puts the pedals out in front of you. If you're used to a compact bike, that longer front end can feel different at first. It's not worse, just different, and it settles in within a block or two. Once you're moving, that length translates into a stable, planted, relaxed ride.
I started out in a higher gear with the pedal assist low, around level two, then shifted up and bumped the assist to give myself a bigger boost. That's the rhythm of riding an eBike with real gears: you're constantly making small adjustments between your seven gears and your five assist levels to match the road, and it becomes second nature fast. On flat ground, cranking the assist up to level five is when this bike really gets going. I settled right in at 20 miles per hour, comfortable and smooth, with power to spare.
On the throttle-only stretch, I went full throttle with no pedaling at all, watched the speed climb, 18, 19, 20, and it capped right there at 20 miles per hour. If you just want to cruise without pedaling, you can do exactly that. In pedal assist you'll reach about the same, a touch over 20. Again, check your local rules on assisted speed and throttle use, because those limits are set by where you ride, not by me.
Now for the real test. On the way back to our office there's a significant hill, probably around a 10 percent grade. This is not an easy climb. Without electric assist, it would be very, very difficult for most people. I put it in pedal assist and started shifting my gears down as I climbed to keep the effort manageable all the way up. And here's a number worth being honest about: I'm 230 pounds. Rider weight matters a lot on a climb. If you're 180, or 130, you're going to get up that same hill noticeably faster and easier than I did. But the point is, I made it up a genuinely steep grade under power, shifting and using the assist together, and the bike had what it needed to get me there. That combination of real gears plus five levels of assist is what turns an intimidating hill into something you can just ride up.
Coming back down the other side, I let it coast and picked up speed, 19, 20, 23, 26, 28, and 30 miles per hour on the downhill, then eased into the brakes and came to a nice gradual stop. Two things there. First, downhill coasting speed is gravity, not the motor, and that's exactly when good disc brakes earn their keep. Second, the braking was quiet, smooth, and completely controlled the whole way down.
But the thing I kept coming back to on the whole ride was just how relaxed it is. Having the pedals out in front instead of below your body, sitting lower to the ground so you're not perched way up high, it adds up to one of the most comfortable rides I've been on. I'll always add the honest caveat that everybody's body is unique, and comfort is personal, so what feels perfect to me might want a small adjustment for you. But the design is doing real work here. We took on a big hill, cruised the flats at 20, and the whole time my body stayed loose. That's the bike doing its job.
So where does the Relaxed Body 2025 land if you're weighing your options? I think of it as the bike for the rider whose number one priority is comfort and ease, but who still wants a real, capable eBike underneath them, with the power to climb, the range to roam, and the brakes and lights to ride confidently. It threads a needle that most bikes can't: low seating, easy mounting, and full leg extension, all at once.
