Standard vs. Recumbent EBike Rickshaw | Which Electric Bike Rickshaw Should You Buy?

I'm Dustin, with 20 years in the bike and e-bike industry. Today, I'll compare our standard e-bike rickshaw to our new recumbent e-bike rickshaw. We've been selling our e-bike rickshaw for about three years, and now we offer a recumbent version lower to the ground, with a longer frame and a more relaxed rider position. Let's go over the similarities before diving into the differences. At level one assistance, you get more range; level five gives less. Both models come with mirrors, turn signals, horns, standard seats, hitch attachments for added baskets or seating, hydraulic disc brakes for smooth stopping, thumb throttles, and the same display. Both have headlights and suspension forks, with a smaller fork on the recumbent. Both have a seven-speed derailleur.

And one thing I wanna point out about the recumbent is you may notice the chain hangs kind of low. We're actually gonna install a derailleur hanger here, which will bring the chain up. So no need to worry about that. Okay, I think that covers most of the similarities. Now let's get into the differences, okay? So the standard e-bike rickshaw has a 24-inch by four-inch front tire and 20-inch by four-inch rear tires. We stuck with the 20-inch by four-inch rears on this one. But now we have a 16 by four-inch front tire. Again, it's just a little bit easier to steer with that 16-inch wheel. Also just makes it easier for the driver as well. Now you're also gonna notice the handlebars are different. We went with this type of handlebar, actually really comfortable. You have your hands right out in front of your body as opposed to the curvature of the bars. Because this is more of a recumbent, we thought it was easier to steer with this style of handlebar. I actually really like it. It's very easy, very nice.

If you want, you can see another video of us out for a ride, and we demonstrate how we use those. So that's a change. Now, the other change, too, is up in the stem area here. We have this adjustable stem to find the perfect angle for you. Also, there's a quick release here to adjust how close or far from the body it gets. We're actually going to extend this piece so these handlebars can come even closer to the rider as well. So that makes it so you can sit here comfortably, and the bars will come right into your body. Now, while I'm here, of course, one of the glaring differences is this seat for the driver, right? Now you've got this backrest, although on that one right now, I have our upgraded seat installed. It doesn't come with that normally.

But with this seat now, you've got some really cool features as well, which the seat doesn't go up and down, but you can slide it significantly forward and backward. In addition, you can also adjust the tilt, and you can fold it forward if you need to fold it down for storage or to transport it as well. Now, another big difference is the length, okay? So I think, let me see. So the height of the seat, the rear seat, is 27 inches off the ground. And actually, so there's a little bit lower. Okay, so this one's about 27 and a half. So the rear seats are almost in the same position. Now the front to back of this rickshaw is about 79 inches. And the front to back of the recumbent version, I believe, is 93. Yeah, 93 inches. So that's a 14-inch difference. So why did we make a recumbent version versus this version? Okay, well, a couple of things. One, adding this seat was a request from a lot of riders.

They wanted something more comfortable, conducive to the driver, with a backrest. Now you have that. Also, you can have it out in front of your body. This allows the seat to be lower and easier to mount and dismount. So it's chair height. Riders can flip up the rest, sit down, and swing their leg over. So we've increased the comfort. Also, by elongating the frame, we've increased stability. This is incredibly stable, I will say, with the four-inch tires. Anybody who gets on it comments on how stable it is. By stretching the frame even more, you increase the stability even more. Again, just another added benefit of the recumbent style. Now, another thing too is we've increased the room back here for the passenger as well. Now, we have the seat pretty far back, but if you bring this forward,

Now you can tell between the two of these with this type of seat, not a lot of legroom. With this one, passengers get a significantly larger amount of legroom. Now let me check this too. So the platform from the ground, those are actually the same. Both are 16 inches off the ground. So not much difference there. In terms of steering, you know, for me, I think this one drives a little less like a tricycle because of the elongated frame where the handlebar positions are. I think it's a little more intuitive. People may catch on a little quicker. If you've never ridden a tricycle before and you know the difference, this one feels more like a trike because it's a standard upright position. But once you get used to it, it still steers really easily. Again, too, both are gonna come with mirrors, and both have the under-seat storage as well. So, really depends.

If you're okay with an upright ride, this one is very popular and works great. If you want a recumbent and you wanna focus on your comfort, if you're gonna be the driver, this might be a nice choice to have this seat. You cannot put this seat on this model because this requires a specific platform, and you need to have the forward pedaling design for this type of seat to work with the pedaling position. Otherwise, if you have it in an upright ride, it's going to chop your leg off while you're riding, and it's just not going to feel right.
