Twenty Years In, and the Relaxed Body Still Earns Its Name
Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I've spent 20 years in the bike and e-bike industry, and I still get a kick out of days like this one: clear skies over San Clemente, California, a full charge, and a few hours to put a bike through its paces. Today I'm riding the Relaxed Body Deluxe 500-watt recumbent e-bike, and I want to take you along for the whole loop. Gearing is your other tool for keeping things smooth, and this is a 7-speed. On the flats and downhills I stayed in a higher gear and just let it roll. As I came up on an incline, I got ready ahead of time: I bumped up to pedal assist five and settled into gear seven, which felt just about right for that stretch. Later, on the steepest climb of the day, I did the opposite and worked my way down through the gears until I was in gear one. That's the whole game with a geared e-bike. Anticipate the terrain, shift before you're bogged down, and let the gears and the motor share the load instead of forcing either one to muscle through. New riders tend to leave it in one gear and wonder why hills feel hard; the fix is to shift early and often, the same way you'd manage a manual transmission before the climb, not in the middle of it.

I save the throttle for the moments it's genuinely handy: pulling away from a dead stop, getting across an intersection quickly, or giving my legs a breather on a flat stretch. Learning to blend the two is the skill. Lean entirely on the throttle and you'll drain the battery faster and miss out on the light exercise that makes riding feel good. Ignore it completely and you're making some situations harder than they need to be.
Here's a detail that matters, and I want to be precise about it. The throttle is good for up to 20 miles per hour. Out on that freshly paved road I gave it a little throttle and watched it stop exactly at 20. That's by design. The throttle will carry you up to that speed and then hold there; it's not a bottomless amount of go. I mention this because e-bike speed rules and class definitions vary from state to state and even city to city, and where you're allowed to ride, and how throttle-only power is treated, can depend on your local laws. Check the rules where you actually ride. What I can tell you for certain is what the bike does: throttle to 20, smooth and predictable, then it holds.
What really drives your range
Battery life is the question I get more than any other, and the honest answer is that it depends, mostly on three things. One, the weight of the rider. Two, the terrain you're on. Three, the grade and topography of your route. The more hills you climb, the less range you'll get. The heavier the rider, the less range you'll get. Ride flat, smooth pavement at a moderate assist level and you'll stretch that battery a long way. Grind up steep hills off-road while leaning on the highest assist and the throttle, and it'll drop faster. Neither is wrong; it's just physics. The real takeaway is that you have to get a feel for the range you personally can expect, with your body, on the type of terrain you actually ride. A number printed on a page can't know how much you weigh or how steep your neighborhood is.
The good news is that this bike gave me real-world numbers to share instead of a lab figure. By the time I'd done a solid chunk of the loop, I still had a little more than half the battery left, and that was after I'd been cranking in the highest level of assistance, using a lot of throttle, and stopping at what felt like every red light in town. Red lights matter, by the way: every stop-and-go start pulls more from the battery than steady cruising does, because getting a bike and rider moving from zero takes the most energy. So more than half a battery, under conditions I was deliberately being greedy with, is a genuinely reassuring result. My advice for new e-bike owners is to spend your first week or two paying attention. Note how far you go, how much battery you use, and what kind of terrain ate into it. Once you know your numbers, you can plan longer rides with confidence and dial your assist level to the trip instead of burning through the battery out of habit. These batteries are more capable than people assume, especially if you use the assist levels intelligently instead of pinning it at five the entire time.
We saved the hardest part for last
Every good test loop needs a gut check, and ours was the climb back up to the office. This is a seriously steep hill, the kind of grade that heads south off Avenida Pico and just keeps tilting up on you. It's a challenging climb on any bike, and it's the exact scenario where a lot of e-bikes start making excuses. So this is the moment of truth: a 500-watt motor, a 230-pound rider, five levels of assist, and a hill that gets steeper the higher you go. I wanted to test it on something that would actually challenge the bike, not a gentle little rise that proves nothing.
I started the climb in level five, and as the grade ramped up I did the smart thing and began downshifting to keep my own legs from redlining. Why make it harder than it needs to be? As the hill steepened, I kept dropping gears, and by the top I'd worked all the way down to gear one, spinning an easy cadence while the motor handled the brunt of the effort. That's the technique that gets you up anything: high assist, and shift down to keep your legs spinning at a comfortable rhythm rather than mashing a heavy gear. Grinding a big gear up a steep hill is how you cook your knees and stall out. Spinning a light one lets you and the motor work together instead of fighting each other.
And I'm going to give you the honest version here, because that's the whole point of riding it myself. At 230 pounds on a 500-watt motor, a hill like that is not a walk in the park. You feel it. It asks something of you. But it was nowhere near excruciating either. The bike kept pulling, I kept spinning, and we made it up without any drama. That's a genuinely good result for a comfort-oriented recumbent. A lighter rider, or a less brutal hill, would have an even easier time of it. Brakes and speed, told straight
Coming back down and rolling toward home, I got a good read on the brakes, and they were excellent. On the descents and coming into stops, they hauled the bike down smoothly and predictably every time: no grabbiness, no fade, no drama, just clean, controlled stops. On a bike that can carry some speed and some weight, confident braking isn't a luxury, it's a safety feature, and this setup delivered it. Good brakes are one of those things you don't think about until you really need them, and then they're the most important part of the whole bike.
Now, about speed, because I want to be careful and accurate here. On one of the downhills near the end I glanced down and we were touching around 30 miles per hour, and the bike came in smooth and composed at that pace. But I want to be crystal clear about what that number is and isn't. That was coasting speed on a downhill, with gravity doing the work, not a motor top speed. Remember, the throttle cuts out at 20 miles per hour. So please don't read 30 as some kind of spec for how fast this bike will drive you on the flat, because it isn't. It's simply proof that when a hill hands you some extra speed, the frame, the tires, and especially those brakes stay planted and in control. Composure at speed matters just as much as the speed itself, and this bike had it in spades.
All told, that little loop came out to about five-plus miles of genuinely mixed riding: trail, pavement, bike lanes, a nasty climb, and a fast descent, and we rolled back to the homestead with a little more than half a battery still in the tank. Steep hills like that one drain a battery, and so does off-road riding and a 230-pound rider leaning on the power. Knowing all of that went into this particular loop, ending the ride with over half remaining tells you plenty about what this bike can carry you through on a normal day, when you're not deliberately trying to work it as hard as I was.
