How to Use the Throttle on Your Electric Bike


Throttle, Pedal Assist, and Gears: The Three Ways Your E-Bike Moves

Almost every electric bike and electric trike we build shares the same three-part control system, and once you understand how those parts work together, the whole ride opens up. You get a throttle. You get pedal assist. And you get seven gears. That holds true across our full electric bike lineup, from a low step-through cruiser to a fat-tire model to a three-wheeler. Learn the three, learn how to layer them, and you will ride with a lot more confidence.

I want to spend this whole guide on the one riders ask about most: the throttle. I hear the same questions again and again. What is the throttle actually for? How is it different from pedal assist? When would I reach for one instead of the other? Those are good questions, and the honest answer is that the two systems do different jobs. They are at their best when you use them together. So let me walk you through it the way I would if we were standing next to a bike in the shop, and then we will head out on the road and put it to work.

What a throttle actually does

A throttle gives you power on demand without pedaling. Press it and the motor moves the bike forward. Ease off and the bike slows back down to whatever your legs are doing. That is the whole idea. It is instant, it is independent of your pedaling, and it is there the moment you want a push.

The bike I am riding for this lesson is our EVRYjourney e-bike, and it uses what we call a thumb throttle. It sits right at your grip, and you control it by pressing down gently with your thumb. Light pressure gives you a little power. More pressure gives you more. The best way to picture it, especially if this is all new to you, is to think about how you accelerate in a car. If you want to go faster, you press the gas a little harder. If you want to ease off, you let up. The throttle on your bike works the same way. There is no on-or-off switch feeling to it. It is a smooth, gradual dial that answers exactly how hard you press.

Two kinds of throttle

Across our bikes you will run into two throttle styles, and they are equally easy to use once you have tried them. The first is the thumb throttle I just described, where a small paddle sits by your grip and you press it with your thumb. The second is a twist throttle, where you rotate the grip itself toward you, the way you might on a scooter. Same job, slightly different motion. Some riders love the twist because it feels natural in the wrist. Others prefer the thumb because your hand stays relaxed and wrapped fully around the grip. Neither is better. It comes down to what feels right to you, and it is one of the little things worth paying attention to when you test ride.

Whichever style your bike has, the feel is the same underneath: gentle, progressive, and completely in your control. The energy bar

The first thing I look at is the energy bar. That is your battery gauge, and it shows how much power you have on the bike right now. Checking it before you leave is just common sense. A short loop around the neighborhood is one thing, but if you are heading out for a longer ride, you want to know you have the charge to get home. Keep half an eye on it as you go, because how you ride changes how fast it drops, and I will come back to that when we talk about the throttle and hills.

Your speed and your odometer

As you get moving, the display shows your speed so you can monitor your pace. There is also an odometer, so you can see how far you have gone. None of this is complicated, and you do not have to stare at it. But being able to glance down and see your battery level, your speed, and your distance means you are always in the loop on your own ride. That is a nice feeling, and it is one of the reasons I tell newer riders to spend a minute getting familiar with the screen before they worry about anything else. A word on range

Battery range is not a fixed number, and that trips up a lot of new riders. How far a charge takes you depends on how you ride: your assist level, how much you lean on the throttle, the hills you climb, your own weight and any cargo, even headwind and tire pressure. Two riders on the same bike can get very different mileage out of the same battery. So rather than trusting a single figure, watch your energy bar over your first few rides and learn what your real range is on the roads you actually travel. The pedal assist number, and why it matters for the throttle

The display also shows which pedal assist level you are in, and this is the one I want you to really pay attention to, because it is tied to a safety feature that trips people up. Here it is: to use the throttle at all, you have to be in pedal assist one or higher. If you are in pedal assist zero, or the bike is switched off altogether, the throttle simply will not respond. Nothing happens when you press it.

That is by design, and it is a good thing. It means the throttle cannot fire when the bike is effectively off or parked at level zero. So my routine is simple. Before I plan to use the throttle, I make sure I am in at least pedal assist one, and I confirm it with a quick look at the display. Once you know to check, it becomes second nature, and you will never be left pressing a throttle that feels dead and wondering what is wrong. Nine times out of ten, a throttle that will not engage just means the bike is sitting in pedal assist zero.

So that is the pre-ride glance: energy bar for battery, a look at your speed and odometer once you are rolling, and a check that you are in pedal assist one or higher if you want the throttle ready. Three seconds, and you are set. It sounds almost too basic to mention, but the riders who build this little habit are the ones who never get caught out on the road.

Pedal Assist Levels and the Start That Catches New Riders Off Guard

Pedal assist is the second of our three systems, and it works alongside the throttle rather than competing with it. Where the throttle gives you power without pedaling, pedal assist multiplies the effort you are already putting in through the pedals. Pick a higher level and each push of your legs carries you further and faster. Pick a lower level and you get a gentler boost that still feels like real riding. Getting comfortable with the levels is mostly about repetition. A quick click moves you up a level, another click moves you back down, and the display confirms it. That is really all there is to the mechanics. What takes a little more thought is knowing which level you want at any given moment, and there is one specific situation where the level you are in makes a big difference the instant you push off.

Why your starting level matters

Here is the thing I want every new rider to understand, because it is the one that surprises people. Say you roll up to a stop while you are in pedal assist four. You put your foot down, you wait, and then you start pedaling again to get going. Because you are in a high assist level, the bike wants to take off. It jumps forward faster than you expected, and if you were not ready for it, that can feel like a lot. It is not a malfunction. The bike is simply doing what pedal assist four is supposed to do, which is give you a strong boost for every pedal stroke, including the very first one.

So when I am pulling away from a dead stop and I want a calm, controlled start, I make sure I am in pedal assist one. From level one, the bike eases forward gently and predictably, and I can build my speed on my own terms. Then, once I am rolling and settled, I can click up to a higher level if I want more push. The lesson is not that high assist levels are bad. It is that a stop is the moment to be deliberate about which level you are in. A slow, smooth start comes from level one. Pedal assist one is livelier than you think

One more thing worth saying about the low end. Do not assume pedal assist one is sluggish. On the bike I am riding, level one is a genuinely brisk ride on flat ground. It is plenty of pace for cruising, and it sips the least battery of any assist level while it does it. That combination, a lively feel and efficient power use, is why I spend a lot of my flat-ground riding in the lower levels and save the higher ones for when I actually need them. You have five levels to play with. Treat them like a range, not a single setting, and match the level to the terrain in front of you. That instinct comes quickly once you have ridden a few times, and it is the heart of riding an e-bike well.

And then there are the seven gears

I have spent this section on pedal assist, but do not forget the third system: your seven gears. It is easy to lump gears and pedal assist together, yet they do genuinely different things, and knowing the difference makes you a smoother rider. Pedal assist is electric. It decides how much the motor adds to your pedaling. The gears are mechanical, exactly like the gears on a traditional bike, and they change how hard or easy each pedal stroke feels regardless of what the motor is doing. A low gear makes pedaling light and spinny, which is what you want for starting off or grinding up a climb. A high gear makes each stroke carry you further, which is what you want once you are cruising at speed on the flat. The throttle does not care about your gear at all, but your legs certainly do. On a flat ride like the one in this lesson, you might barely touch the gears. The moment you hit rolling hills, though, shifting down before a climb and back up on the descent, while your pedal assist and throttle handle the power, is what makes the ride feel effortless instead of clumsy. Give yourself a few rides to get the rhythm, and soon you will shift without thinking about it.

When to Reach for the Throttle: Quick Starts, Busy Streets, and Hills

Now for the fun part: knowing when the throttle earns its keep. Pedal assist is your everyday cruising tool. The throttle is what you reach for when you want power right now, on demand, without waiting for your pedaling to bring it. Over a normal ride, there are a handful of moments where I use it almost every time, and once you see the pattern you will start using it the same way.

Getting off the line

The first is simply starting out. Instead of throwing down a hard first pedal stroke to get the bike rolling, I give the throttle a press and let the motor ease me into motion. Even from pedal assist one, that takes me from a dead stop to moving with almost no effort. It is a small thing, but it makes every start smoother, and it is especially welcome if your knees or hips would rather not push a heavy first pedal.

Crossing a busy street

The second is the one I lean on most for safety. When I come up to a busy road, I stop, I check for traffic, and when it is clear I want to get across quickly and decisively rather than fumbling to build speed. This is a perfect moment for the throttle. I press it, and it carries me across the street promptly, no hard pedaling required. Getting through an intersection without hesitation is exactly the kind of situation the throttle is made for, and it is worth practicing on quiet streets first so it feels automatic when you need it.

Catching up, and climbing

The third is keeping up and getting up. Picture riding with a friend who has pulled ahead of you on a climb. You are already in pedal assist three or four and pedaling hard, but you are not going to close the gap on legs alone. Instead of clicking up and up, you can stay in your assist level and add a touch of throttle for a little extra power to reel them back in. The two systems stack. That same trick is what gets you up a genuinely steep hill. When you are already in your strongest pedal assist level and the grade still demands more, engaging the throttle on top of pedal assist is what pulls you over the top. It is the combination that gets you out of sticky spots quickly, whether that is a steep driveway, a long incline, or a climb you simply would not attempt on a regular bike.

And yes, you can ride on throttle alone if you like. Stop pedaling altogether, hold the throttle, and the bike will carry you. As a class of vehicle, e-bikes are generally regulated so that throttle-only riding tops out around twenty miles per hour, with pedal assist allowed to reach higher, so you are never going to launch off like a motorcycle. It is smooth, manageable power. There is a catch to riding purely on throttle, though, and it is all about your battery, which is where we are headed next.

A real-world example

Here is how it all comes together on an actual ride. Say you are cruising a flat bike path in pedal assist one, enjoying the pace and sipping battery. You reach a stop sign at a cross street. You brake, you wait, the road clears, and you want out of there quickly, so you release the brakes and give the throttle a firm press to get across. Safely over, you settle back into pedaling. Then the path tilts uphill. Now you have two clean choices: click your pedal assist up to two and let the extra boost carry you, which is the most efficient way, or stay in pedal assist one and feather the throttle to help you crest the rise. Both work. On a long climb I would lean on pedal assist to protect the battery. On a short, punchy little hill, a quick hit of throttle is the easy answer. That is the whole game, made of dozens of small decisions like these, and every one of them gets more natural the more you ride.

Battery Smarts, the Two Safety Features, and Why the Throttle Is So Easy to Use

The throttle is a wonderful tool, but it asks more of your battery than pedal assist does, and understanding that is what separates a rider who gets stranded from one who always makes it home with charge to spare.

The throttle drinks more battery

When you ride on throttle alone, the motor is doing all the work, so it pulls more power and drains the battery faster than pedal assist, where your legs share the load. That is not a reason to avoid the throttle. It is just a reason to be smart about it. If you are heading out for a short ride on flat ground, go ahead and use the throttle the whole way if that is what you enjoy. It will not get you into trouble on a quick loop. But for longer rides, or anything with real hills, the move is to use the throttle in combination with the right pedal assist level rather than leaning on pure throttle the entire time. Let your legs and your assist level carry the cruising, and save the throttle for the starts, the crossings, and the climbs where it truly helps. Ride that way and your battery lasts far longer. On the flip side, if you knew you were going out for a genuinely short, flat spin, pure throttle the whole time is perfectly fine. It is the long, hilly rides where relying only on the throttle can leave you short.

The two safety features to remember

There are two built-in safety behaviors worth locking into memory, because both can briefly confuse a new rider. The first we already covered: the throttle only works when you are in pedal assist one or higher. In pedal assist zero, or with the bike off, the throttle stays silent. The second is just as important. You have to have your hands off the brakes for the throttle to engage. If you are squeezing a brake lever, even lightly, the throttle will not fire. That is a deliberate safety feature, and a smart one, because it means you can never accidentally power into the motor while you are trying to slow down or hold the bike still at a stop. So at an intersection, when the way is clear and you are ready to go, release the brakes first, then press the throttle. If the throttle ever feels dead, run through those two checks: am I in pedal assist one or higher, and are my hands fully off the brake levers? One of those two is almost always the answer.

Easy on the hands, smooth on the road

One of the things I appreciate most about the throttle is how little effort it takes to use. The lever presses with very light pressure.
