Why Climbing Hills on an Electric Trike Is a Skill of Its Own

I've spent close to twenty years around bikes and e-bikes, and one question comes up again and again from folks shopping for a three-wheeler: what happens when the road tilts up? Hills make people nervous, and I understand why. A trike feels planted and safe on flat ground, but the first time you point one at a real grade, you start to wonder whether the motor is going to do the work or whether you're going to grind to a halt halfway up. So let's walk through exactly how to ride an electric trike uphill, the way I coach it in person.
The first thing to understand is that a trike climbs differently than a two-wheel bike, and it comes down to simple physics. You've got three wheels touching the ground instead of two. That extra contact is what gives an electric trike its wonderful stability, but it also creates more friction and more drag. Every one of those tires is pressing into the pavement, and the pavement is pushing right back. On flat ground you barely notice it. On a climb, that rolling resistance is working against you the whole way up.
On a two-wheel bike, you can stand up on the pedals, rock the frame side to side, and throw your body weight into every stroke to muscle up a steep pitch. A trike doesn't ask you to balance, which is the entire point of it, but it also means you can't really stand and dance up a hill the same way. You stay seated, you stay planted, and you let the drivetrain and the motor carry you. That's not a weakness. It's just a different technique, and once you know it, hills stop being intimidating.
It helps to think about what a grade actually is. A gentle, gradual grade is the kind of long, mild rise you might not even register in a car, where the road tilts up a few degrees and just keeps going. A serious grade is the steep, obvious kind that makes your legs remember they exist. The same trike, the same motor, and the same rider will behave completely differently on those two hills, and most of the advice in this guide really comes down to knowing which one you're facing and setting up accordingly. When I call a grade serious in here, I mean the steep stuff, where technique matters most and small mistakes cost you the most.

When you're climbing on a trike, having the assistance isn't a luxury, it's the key to the whole thing. Keep your momentum going
If you take one idea away from this entire guide, make it this one: on a serious grade, do everything you can to avoid stopping in the middle of the hill. When you're leaning on the assistance to climb, getting going again from a dead stop midway up can be genuinely difficult, and how difficult depends on the steepness. Momentum is your friend. The speed you carry into the base of a hill helps push you up that first stretch before the grade really starts to bite.
There's a real difference between a long, gradual grade and a short, steep one. On a gentle, gradual incline, stopping partway up isn't a big deal, you can get rolling again without much drama. But on a steep pitch, a dead stop can leave you stuck, spinning, or having to climb off and walk it. So the steeper the hill, the more committed you should be to keeping your wheels turning from bottom to top.
Build a little run-up
The simplest way to protect your momentum is to earn some before you reach the climb. If you can see a hill coming and the approach is clear and safe, build a little speed on the flat so you arrive at the base already moving. That running start carries you into the grade and buys you those crucial first few yards. Starting a climb from a standstill right at the bottom is the hard way to do it. Rolling into it is the easy way.
Sometimes you don't get a choice. In the demo for this guide I actually started partway up the hill from a dead stop, just to show it can be done. It's more challenging that way, and I wouldn't pick it on purpose, but a strong motor will still pull you through. Just know that a standing start on a grade asks more of the bike and of you, so avoid it when you can and be ready for a firmer push on the throttle when you can't.
Position your body for the grade
Your body position should match the steepness. On a moderate grade, the kind of everyday incline you'll meet on most rides, you can just sit normally, upright and relaxed, and let the trike do its thing. On a serious grade, lean forward a little. Shifting your weight toward the front keeps the bike settled and your drive wheels planted, and it takes away that light, tippy feeling you can get when the nose is pointed at the sky. It's a small adjustment, but on a steep climb it makes the trike feel far more sure-footed.
Don't ride straight across a steep slope
Here's a safety point that catches new trike riders off guard. If you can avoid it, you don't want to ride parallel across the face of a serious grade, that is, traversing sideways along a steep hillside rather than heading straight up or straight down it. A trike sitting across a steep slope is at risk of tipping, because gravity is pulling it toward the downhill side. Straight up and straight down is far safer than sideways.
If you do need to cut across a hill, lean your body toward the grade, toward the uphill side, to keep your wheels balanced and weighted evenly as you ride. That deliberate lean counteracts the pull of the slope and keeps all three wheels doing their job. Take it slow, keep your line short, and get back to riding straight up or down as soon as you reasonably can. What to do if you do stall
Let's say it happens anyway: you stop on a steeper grade and now you're stuck. Don't panic, and don't just mash the throttle from a dead stop with the front pointed straight up the hill, because that's the hardest possible ask for the motor. If it's safe, point the trike slightly across or down the slope to get rolling, then curve back into the climb once you have a little momentum under you. On a very steep pitch it's sometimes easier and safer to walk the trike a few feet to a shallower spot, remount there, and start again with the motor helping from the very first pedal stroke. Getting rolling first and steering into the grade beats fighting a standing start every time.
Put those habits together, carry your speed in, keep rolling on the steep stuff, lean forward when it's steep, and never sit parked across a sidehill, and you've handled most of what a hill can throw at you before you've even touched the throttle or the gears.
Before you decide whether to climb on throttle alone or add your own pedaling, you need to be honest about two things: how much you weigh and how much motor you've got. On a trike, the two are tied together more tightly than most people expect.
Weight changes everything on a climb
Here's a rule of thumb I give riders in person. If you're a rider over about 250 pounds, you may not be able to rely solely on the throttle to get you up a hill, and it depends on the size of your motor and the steepness of the grade. That's not a knock on anyone; it's just the reality of moving more mass up an incline against all that three-wheel drag. Lighter riders, on the other hand, can often use the throttle by itself to climb, again depending on the motor. The more you weigh, the more you should expect to pitch in with pedal assist on the steeper stuff, and the more motor you'll want underneath you.
Why motor size matters when you buy
This is exactly why I nudge people to think about climbing before they purchase, not after. A bigger, more powerful motor gives you more headroom for hills and for heavier riders. Throttle or pedal assist: which should you use?
People ask me all the time which mode is better for hills, and the honest answer is that they solve different problems. Throttle only is the simplest: you're not pedaling, so it's effortless, and it's ideal when your motor clearly has the muscle for your weight and the grade. Pedal assist gives you more, because your legs and the motor are working together, which means you can get up steeper hills and you keep more control over how hard you're working. My general guidance is this: lighter riders on strong motors can often just throttle up moderate grades, while heavier riders and anyone facing a genuinely steep pitch will get up more reliably on pedal assist. There's no shame in either one. Use whatever gets you to the top comfortably, and don't hesitate to add a few pedal strokes to a throttle climb the moment you feel the motor start to work harder.
How to climb on throttle only
When you're going throttle only, the technique is straightforward. Get into your lowest gear before the hill, roll into the base with a little momentum, and press the throttle. On a real grade you can push the throttle all the way and just let the motor pull. If the pitch is steep, lean forward as we talked about; if it's moderate, sit upright and relax.
Let me tell you what that looks like in the real world. I'm 230 pounds. On the 750-watt trike, in gear one, with the throttle fully engaged and not pedaling at all, I climbed a decent grade at right around 10 miles per hour with no problem whatsoever. No pedal assist, no pedaling, the motor did the entire job. I want to be clear that 10 miles per hour is my climbing pace on that particular hill, not a top-speed number; it's simply how fast the motor pulled my weight up that grade. Point the same trike at a steeper pitch, or put a heavier rider on it, and that climbing speed comes down. Add a lighter rider and it climbs faster.
That's the honest picture of throttle-only climbing: wonderfully easy when your motor has enough muscle for your weight and the grade, and something you'll want to supplement with pedaling when the hill gets ahead of the motor. Throttle-only is great when it works, but the most capable, most controllable way up a serious hill is pedal assist paired with smart gear use. This is where a little know-how really pays off.
The golden setup: highest assist, lowest gear
As you come into a hill on your trike, do two things. Put your pedal assist in its highest level, and put your drivetrain in its lowest gear. Starting in the highest level of assistance makes sure you've got enough power to get up the hill, especially if you're a heavier rider, and you can always turn it down later. Your lowest gear gives you the easiest, most forgiving pedaling, which is exactly what you want when the road tilts up. Highest assist, lowest gear, every single time you enter a climb. That's the setup that gets everybody up.
Then read the hill and dial it back
Once you're climbing and you can feel how the grade is treating you, start adjusting. If the bike is clearly going to pull you up with power to spare, you'll often find you're over-pedaling, spinning the cranks with almost no resistance because the motor is doing so much of the work. That's your cue to shift the gears up and, if you like, back the assistance off a notch so your pedaling actually matches the bike's pace.
Here's how that played out in the demo. I started the pedal-assist run in level five, the highest, even though I suspected it would be more than enough. Sure enough, once I was moving I realized I was over-pedaling, so I shifted up, into second, then third, and backed off the assistance a little. That felt right. Then, just to show what the motor can really do, I put the assistance back up to five, climbed in gear five and was still cooking, and even clicked up to gear six and flew up the hill at about 11 miles per hour. At 230 pounds. Super easy. And again, that 11 is climbing pace on that hill, not a top-speed figure.
The takeaway is the pattern, not the exact numbers: enter in your highest assist and lowest gear, then either turn down the assist or shift up the gears to match the cadence of your pedaling until it feels natural. You're tuning the bike to the hill in real time.
Combine the throttle and your pedaling
Here's something a lot of riders miss: on most of these trikes you can feather the throttle while you're also in pedal assist. When I hit the base of a steep pitch, I'll sometimes give the throttle a little extra push to punch through the steepest section, then ease off and let pedal assist carry me the rest of the way. Think of the throttle as an on-demand boost you can layer on top of your pedaling for the hardest few yards. The goal through all of this is a comfortable cadence, that steady, unhurried spin of the pedals where you're neither straining nor spinning uselessly. If your legs are whirling with no resistance, shift up. If you're grinding and struggling to turn the cranks, add assist or a touch of throttle. Chasing that comfortable cadence, and adjusting gears and assist to hold it, is the whole game on a long climb.
You can't shift gears standing still
Here's a quirk of a geared trike that trips people up: you can't shift the gears while you're stopped, the bike needs to be moving for the derailleur to move the chain between gears. So if you're parked near the bottom of a hill and you're sitting in too high a gear, you can't just click down to first while standing there. What I do is ride a quick little circle or loop on the flat to get the bike rolling, shift down into gear one while I'm moving, and then head for the hill already in the right gear. Plan that in before you start the climb.
Be gentle with your derailleur on steep grades
This is the part experienced riders learn the hard way. On a really steep grade, shifting gears in the middle of the climb can be problematic. When you're torquing down hard on the pedals, putting a lot of force through the drivetrain, trying to shift puts a lot of pressure on the derailleur, and it can be difficult, clunky, or downright unwilling to change gears. Force it under that kind of load over and over and you're asking for trouble.
The fix is the setup we already talked about: get into your lowest gear before you head into the hill. If you're already in your easiest gear when you hit the climb, you won't need to downshift under load, because there's nowhere lower to go. And shifting up, which is what you'll actually want to do once you realize the motor has plenty in reserve, is much easier on the derailleur than grinding down into a lower gear mid-climb. So prepare yourself: lowest gear before the hill, then shift up if and when you need to while you're on it. On gentler, gradual grades none of this is a concern and you can shift freely, but on a serious pitch, treat your derailleur kindly.
