The First Four-Wheel E-Bike I've Ever Ridden
I've ridden a lot of bikes. Two wheels, three wheels, fat tires, folders, cruisers, cargo haulers — I've thrown a leg over most of what exists. So when I tell you the ANYterrain Quad caught me off guard, understand where that's coming from. This is the first four-wheel electric bike I've ever put real miles on, and it does something I didn't expect from a machine with this shape: it stays flat, it stays calm, and not once did it make me think about tipping over.
Picture it. Four wheels — two up front, two in the back. The front end carries a tilting steering mechanism that lets those front wheels lean with the road while the rest of the bike stays level. The first time I rolled out, I was up to fifteen, sixteen miles an hour before I'd really registered it, then seventeen, eighteen, easing off a touch heading into a curve. But three wheels have a quirk. A standard trike puts two wheels in the back and one up front, and that fixed rear axle likes to keep going straight. Corner a little too eagerly, lean the wrong way, catch a cambered road, and a trike can feel like it wants to lift a wheel. It rarely does, but the sensation is there, and for a lot of riders that sensation is exactly the thing they were trying to escape.

I want to be honest about first impressions, because I think a lot of people look at the geometry of a four-wheeler and assume the opposite of what's true. The frame is tall, the seating position is upright like a cruiser, and the instinct is to think "that's going to feel top-heavy." I get it. I thought about it too, the first time I swung a leg over.
It never happened. At no point in any of my rides did I worry about tipping. On a rigid trike, the axles are fixed. The wheels sit where they sit, square to the frame, and if the ground tilts, the whole bike tilts with it. That's fine on flat pavement. It gets interesting the moment the surface stops being flat — a driveway apron, a crowned road, a trail with roots, or a bike lane that slopes off toward the gutter.
The ANYterrain's front end is not rigid. The two front wheels are mounted so that they can move independently of the frame, leaning as a pair. When one wheel goes up, the other goes down. The frame — and you, sitting on it — stays level while the wheels do the work of following the ground. It's a little like the way a good suspension keeps a car body flat while the tires track a bumpy road, except here it's happening through the geometry of the steering itself.
The tilted bike lane test
The clearest example I can give you happened on an ordinary bike lane. If you've ridden much, you know that bike lanes are often the worst-maintained strip of the whole road, and they frequently slope toward the curb for drainage. On a lot of bikes, that side-slope is a low, nagging annoyance — you're always subtly leaning uphill to stay upright.
On the ANYterrain, the road was sloping off to the right, and I could feel the front end just... absorb it. One wheel rode higher on the crown, the other dropped into the low side, and the frame stayed planted and level underneath me. The bike stayed balanced on terrain that would have had a rigid trike leaning with the road. That's the tilting front doing exactly what it was designed to do: keep rubber on the road and keep the rider level, even when the ground refuses to cooperate.
Same thing off-road. I took it out on some hard-packed trails — rocky, bumpy, the kind of surface where a normal bike beats you up a little — and the front end kept articulating over everything. When one front wheel climbed a rock, the other stayed down. The bike tracked the ground instead of hopping across it. Combine that with the shock absorption you get from having four wheels in the first place, and rough ground stops being something to endure and becomes something to enjoy.
Why it corners better than you'd expect
Here's the part that surprised me most. You'd think four wheels would make a bike feel like it resists turning, the way a wide, flat-footed trike sometimes does. The opposite is true, because the leaning geometry lets the ANYterrain lean into a turn a little the way a two-wheeler does. Instead of the static, push-it-around feeling of a fixed rear axle, you get a front end that banks with you. It corners naturally. On a trike, the two static rear wheels want to keep going straight, so tight corners can feel like you're wrestling the bike around rather than flowing through the turn. How it stacks up against a tadpole trike
If the phrase "two wheels up front" rings a bell, you might be thinking of a tadpole trike — a three-wheeler with two wheels in the front and one in the back. What it can't give you is a fourth contact patch and that squared-off, four-corner stability at the rear.
The ANYterrain borrows the best instinct of the tadpole layout — two leaning wheels up front — and marries it to a two-wheel rear end. You end up with the cornering feel that comes from a leaning front and the planted, load-it-up stability that comes from a wide rear. It's a genuinely different animal from anything with three wheels, and after enough miles on it, the four-wheel logic just clicks.
The upright seating position deserves a mention here too. Some four-wheel machines put you in a low, reclined, feet-forward posture. The 750W motor and the 20 mph ceiling
Power comes from a 750-watt rear-drive hub motor mounted between the two back wheels. That's a meaningful amount of torque, and it needs to be — you're moving a wide, four-wheel machine that's built to carry cargo and climb, not a featherweight road bike. On flat ground it pulls away confidently, and on the hard-packed trails I rode, it never felt like it was straining to keep me going.
Top speed lands at up to 20 miles an hour, whether you're on the throttle or using pedal assist. That 20 mph figure is the number that keeps this machine in friendly legal territory in a lot of places, and it's a deliberate choice; more on that later. You can get there two ways. Twist or press the throttle and the bike simply goes — no pedaling required, which is a genuine gift on a hill or when you're pulling away from a stop with a loaded basket. Or use pedal assist, where the motor amplifies your own pedaling. There are multiple assist levels to dial in, so you can set it light for a workout or heavy for an easy cruise. Backing the motor is a 7-speed drivetrain, so this isn't a one-gear e-bike that leaves you spinning uselessly or grinding to a crawl. The brakes might be my favorite part
I don't usually gush about brakes, but the hydraulic disc brakes on this bike earned it. Two things stood out immediately. First, they're quiet — no squeal, no grind, just a clean, controlled bite. Second, they are genuinely powerful. Coming down a hill with real momentum behind me, I squeezed the levers and the bike shed speed swiftly and evenly, no drama, no fade. Good brakes aren't a luxury on a bike like this, they're the whole safety story. When you're carrying cargo or descending, stopping power is what turns confidence into safety. Reverse, and why it's smarter than it sounds
Here's a feature you don't see on most bikes: reverse. The ANYterrain can back itself up. Press for reverse and the motor walks the bike backward, which sounds like a gimmick until the first time you need it. A four-wheel machine is not something you can easily hop off and drag backward out of a tight spot the way you would a light two-wheeler. The ANYterrain also comes ready for real roads and low light. There's a front headlight for riding at night, turn signals on the rear so drivers and other riders can read where you're headed, and an electric horn for the moments a bell won't cut it. None of these are exotic on their own, but together they signal the intent of the machine: this is meant to be ridden out in the world, in traffic, at dusk, on errands — not just paraded around a parking lot. Turn signals in particular are a genuinely nice touch on a machine this wide, because you're taking up more of the lane and it helps to broadcast your intentions clearly.
Put the motor, the gears, the brakes, and the road hardware together and you get a bike that's easy to control at any speed I rode it. Nothing about the powertrain fought me. It went when I asked, it stopped when I needed, and it gave me the tools to ride it exactly as hard or as gently as I felt like.
A bike is only as good as the ground it can actually cover, so let's talk about where the ANYterrain goes, what's holding it up, how far it'll take you, and what it can carry when it gets there.
The tires, and the odd-looking wheel setup
Start at the corners. The ANYterrain rides on 4-inch-wide fat tires, with 20-inch wheels in the rear and 16-inch wheels up front. That mismatch is intentional. Putting the smaller 16-inch wheels up front angles the front of the bike down toward those two leaning wheels, which lowers the front and works hand-in-hand with the tilting steering to add stability. It looks a little unusual the first time you notice it, but there's a reason for every inch of it.
The four-inch width is the other half of the traction story. Fat tires plant a big patch of rubber on the ground, which keeps the bike stable and sure-footed across surfaces that would have a skinny-tired bike skating around. On pavement they roll smooth and soak up cracks. On hard-packed dirt and gravel they dig in and hold. Where it shines, and one honest limit
On pavement, this bike is a joy — smooth, stable, quiet. On hard-packed trails, it's genuinely fun; I took it over rocky, bumpy ground and the combination of fat tires, four wheels, and that articulating front end just ate it up. Pavement, hard-pack, gravel, dirt — you name it, it handled it.
Now the honest part, because I'd rather tell you the limit than let you find it the hard way. Soft, loose sand is not this bike's friend, and it isn't any trike's or quad's friend either. When the surface gives way under the wheels the way beach sand does, no amount of fat tire fully saves you. This is a physics problem, not a flaw specific to the ANYterrain, but I'd be doing you a disservice if I let you picture it powering across a soft dune. Hard-packed sand near the waterline? Fine. Deep, dry, loose sand? That's asking too much of any four-wheeler. Keep it to firm ground and it'll reward you.
Battery and range
Power for all of this comes from a 48V 20Ah battery built with Samsung cells, mounted behind the seat. On a full charge it's rated for a range of up to 50 miles, though I'll always tell you the truth about range figures: the number you actually see depends on how much throttle you use, how much you pedal, how much you're carrying, and how hilly your route is. Lean on the throttle and haul cargo up hills and you'll see less; pedal along on a light assist level on flat ground and you'll stretch it further. Treat "up to 50 miles" as the ceiling under favorable conditions, not a promise for every ride, and you won't be disappointed.
Cargo, and turning a bike into a utility vehicle
This is where the four-wheel layout quietly pays off in a way that has nothing to do with the ride. There's a big basket in the rear and room up front too, and because the platform is wide and planted, loading it up doesn't make the bike squirrelly the way piling weight on a two-wheeler does. The four wheels distribute the load evenly and the bike stays steady, full basket or empty.
That changes what the bike is for. Groceries, tools, gear for a day outdoors, whatever you need to move — the cargo space turns the ANYterrain into something closer to a light utility vehicle than a recreational toy. Who I'd put on this bike
If you love the outdoors but balance has started to hold you back, this is the bike. That's the rider I keep picturing — someone who used to ride, or who wants to ride, but for whom a two-wheeler has become a source of anxiety rather than freedom. The four-wheel design takes the balancing entirely off your plate. You can stop without dismounting, sit at a light without putting a foot down, and roll slowly without the low-speed wobble that makes people give up on bikes. A word on street legality — please read this
We designed the ANYterrain to be street legal, and a lot of the engineering choices flow from that goal. We kept the motor at 750 watts and the top speed at 20 miles an hour specifically so it can be treated as a bicycle in California and used in bike lanes. If we made the motor massive and the bike faster, it would stop qualifying as a bicycle, and the whole point — being able to ride it where you ride a bike — would go away. The width helps here too; it's no wider than a tricycle, so it fits where trikes are allowed.
Here's my disclaimer, and I mean it sincerely: e-bike and quadricycle laws vary a great deal from state to state and even city to city, and how a four-wheel machine is classified is not always clearly spelled out in local rules. What's true in California may not be true where you live. Before you ride in bike lanes or on any particular road or path, please confirm the rules in your own city and state.
