Every so often I like to hand two of our bikes to two very different riders, point them at the same stretch of road, and just listen. You learn more from that than from any spec sheet ever printed. Gears and assist work together, and the riders played with that balance the whole way. When Rob felt like he was pedaling too much, he shifted to a higher gear and settled right in. When they wanted more of a workout, they dropped to a lower gear or backed off the assist to add resistance on purpose. That is the beauty of the system: you are always in control of how much the bike does for you versus how much you do for yourself, minute to minute.

Downhill is where a lot of new riders get confused, so pay attention to how these two handled it. Going down, they turned the assist all the way off. You do not need the motor when gravity is doing the work, and there is something genuinely wonderful about coasting down a hill with zero assist, just feeling the wind and letting the bike run. Nate dropped into a higher gear and cruised straight past Rob on one downhill stretch, no motor required. Turning assist down on the descents is also a smart habit for stretching your battery over a longer ride.

Then came the real test: the hills, this time going up. This is where an e-bike earns its keep, and it is where the difference in power showed up most clearly. Nate, on the fat tire, was barely pedaling in a middle assist level and still holding a comfortable pace up a fairly steep grade. When he wanted it even easier, he bumped the assist up and dropped to a lower gear and the climb basically flattened out under him. On the steepest pitch he clicked the assist near the top of its range, put it in a low gear, and simply zoomed up, and he looked back to find Rob still at the bottom. Both riders laughed about it, and Rob was a good sport, because he was climbing at his own pace on purpose to bank a little more exercise. That is the key insight: on a hill, more assist plus a lower gear equals an easier climb, and you get to decide how much of that help you actually want.

A word on the throttles, since the two bikes differ here. Interestingly, neither rider leaned on the throttle much, mostly because so much of the loop was downhill or gently rolling. Nate noted that he would want it more on a sustained climb, and that is exactly the right instinct. A throttle is your on-demand boost for pulling away from a stop, getting through an intersection quickly, or powering up a grade without pedaling. The twist throttle on the fat tire and the thumb throttle on the 20-inch both do the same job; they just ask your hand to do it in a different way.

The brakes got a proper stress test, and they passed. Rob hit them hard, the kind of quick, firm stop you would need if a car pulled out in front of you, and reported that they were great. Handling impressed both of them. What struck me is how deliberately they controlled the effort. The rider who wanted more of a burn talked about pacing himself: a set amount of pedal assist for a stretch, then a lean on the throttle, then back to pedaling, so he kept moving but still banked real exercise. On the hills he deliberately chose a lower gear and less assist to make his legs work. That is the move I want every rider to internalize. If you want more of a workout, you have three levers: shift to a harder gear, lower your assist level, and pedal more instead of using the throttle. If you want less, you do the opposite.
